The Greater Philadelphia region is getting a littler greener every day, but there are still many neighborhoods, streets and backyards in need of trees and all the benefits they bring.
That’s why the Phillies, ARAMARK and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society joined together on Earth Day to announce their second season of “Home Runs for Trees,” the program aimed at helping to restore the region’s tree coverage. The initiative is part of the PHS-led Plant One Million campaign, a multi-state tree-planting effort encompassing 13 counties in southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and the state of Delaware.
For each home run hit by a Phillies player this season, PHS and its partners will plant a tree this fall in locations such as parks, urban neighborhoods, and watershed areas. Last year, thanks to the Phillies’ hitting power, the program added 158 trees to the region.
“This year, we’re hoping that Home Runs for Trees inspires the Phillies’ many fans to plant trees in their yards and neighborhoods,” said Drew Becher, PHS President. “We would like to get everyone engaged in this campaign, and we’re here to provide the training and support to make that possible. Together, we will reach our goal of a million new trees in a very short time.”
The Phillies and ARAMARK’s participation in this tree-planting effort is part of the award-winning “Red Goes Green” program, which emphasizes the Phillies’ leading role in environmental responsibility.
“We’re pleased to once again partner with ARAMARK and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in the Phillies Home Runs for Trees program,” said David Montgomery, Phillies President. “This initiative is a great way to help restore the region’s tree coverage, and we’re proud to have the program among our Red Goes Green sustainability efforts.”
The tree plantings are made possible through the generous sponsorship of ARAMARK, which provides excellent dining experiences at the annual PHS Philadelphia Flower Show and serves as Citizens Bank Park’s exclusive food and beverage partner.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with the Phillies and PHS on Home Runs for Trees,” said Marc Bruno, President, ARAMARK Sports and Entertainment. “Programs like this not only make our region even more beautiful, but also improve the environment and enrich our communities.”
