Congratulations to the 2016 Plant One Million “Tree of the Year” winner:
Sheila Roberts and her tree of hope!

This special tree will get one year of free tree care from Bartlett Tree Experts.

This weeping willow (shown left), was planted at the Cooper Sprouts community garden in Camden, NJ by Sheila and the NJ Tree Foundation five years ago as part of the Urban Airshed Reforestation Program. Sheila wrote,  “Our community members fight poverty every day, yet the willow tree remains a peaceful place in our community, helping our residents to see the importance of our urban canopy.”

The second place tree (shown left) is a tulip poplar in the Roxborough Reservoir in Philadelphia. The tree was saved from suffocating vines by Darren Brown during his time with PowerCorpsPHL. “Never before had I felt a connection with a tree, but this one was different and I never thought I could feel this passionate about a tree.”

The “Tree of the Year” contest was launched this year by PHS and Plant One Million partners to raise awareness about the emotional connection and special relationship people have with trees in their community.  Citizens in the greater Philadelphia area were asked to submit a photo and story of a tree they love, with six entries being selected as finalists.  The public was invited to vote for their favorite tree story over the last month.
